MATTA goodwill tourney set for Nov. 5
Players of the 6th Micronesian Games gold medal-winning team for table tennis will be on opposing sides when the Marianas Amateur Table Tennis Association holds its Saipan vs. Tinian Goodwill Games on Nov. 5 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The Saipan team will be bannered by four mainstays from the last summer’s CNMI National Table Tennis Team—Jean Shi, Su Yong Dong, Budhi Gurung, and Lin Ying Chen—as well as veteran paddlers Mario Espeleta, Peter Deleon, and playing coach Steven Lim. Shi won the Micro Games women’s singles championship.
The team from Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino, meanwhile, will be made up of two standouts from the Commonwealth’s national team—Charlie Cheng and Roblin Lu—plus alternate Wei Bin Liang. Also suiting up are Alfred Yue, Luke Lu, Liu Fuling. Zeng Ma will serve as playing coach.
Action kicks off bright and early at 8am and continues throughout the day until 6pm in the evening. Espeleta, who serves as MATTA spokesman, said he the public is invited to watch the competition pitting Saipan and Tinian’s best table tennis players.
Expected to officiate the games are brothers Marvin and Mark Espeleta, who also served in the same capacity during the Micro Games table tennis competition held last July at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium.
