After months of planning, the 2006 Inter-Hotel Basketball League HANMI Cup finally kicked off yesterday with a big show.

The opening ceremony had all the works, including the parade of teams, muse competition, competition for best uniform, a dance number, and of course, remarks by organizers of the league and officials.

Showing off their uniforms while being introduced by “Dr. Love” Rico Cardoniga in the ceremony were Hyatt Regency Saipan, Marianas Resort and Spa, Hafadai Hotel, Fiesta Resort and Spa, Aqua Resort Club, Hotel Nikko Saipan, and Pacific Islands Club. Also competing in the league are Saipan Grand Hotel and Saipan World Resort.

Shortly after the teams paraded around the court and Northern Marianas Bartenders Association president Lito Espino gave his opening remarks, all were entertained with an electrifying number by the Club Jama Angels.

Special messages were then delivered by Philippine Consul General Wilfredo Maximo and Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands chairwoman Lynn Knight.

Muses for each teams were then called front and center, and after being accompanied by “superhero Batman” in a parade around the court, the judges decision was announced that Marianas Resort and Spa’s Anna Nepytaeva was the winner of the Best Muse Award.

Hyatt Regency Saipan was also recognized with a Best in Uniform Award.

HANMI Cup commissioner Ramon Awit then gave closing remarks before the first game was played between Hyatt Regency Saipan and Hotel Nikko Saipan.

Officials are currently finalizing the regular season schedule, which will be distributed to each team in the coming days.

HANMI Cup action will be featured every Tuesday and Thursday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium, with the first game at 8pm and the second at 9:30pm.
