Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela has proclaimed April 25 to 19 as National Library Week during a proclamation signing yesterday.

Saipan Southern High School librarian Sudi Napalan said this is the CNMI’s first proclamation of National Library Week and that it is a “monumental event for our local libraries throughout the CNMI.”

National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country.

For the first time ever, libraries throughout the CNMI would be working with one objective: “To promote reading and literacy to all people in different race and varying ages here in the CNMI,” said Napalan.

There are 33 CNMI school libraries, in addition to the CNMI Archives, Curriculum Resource Center and Olympia T. Borja Library of the Northern Marianas College, and the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library.

Tudela said that without a school library or any other library, “our children’s education would not be complete for they will not have much accessibility to research, obtain information from their collection of books, and more importantly, improve their reading skills.”

During this week and throughout the month of April, the library media center will offer activities to highlight the various services it offers students and staff, ranging from storytelling and information dissemination to helping improve reading skills and using the Internet.

This year’s National Library Week theme is “Join the circle of knowledge at your library.”
