The future of CNMI tennis led the list of winners in the singles division of the 8th Annual Pacific Islands Club-Gatorade Tennis Tournament held from March 28 to 30 at the PIC courts in San Antonio.

Ji Hoon Heo and Thea Minor, who were part of the International Tennis Federation Pacific-Oceania Junior Touring teams that played in Australia and New Zealand, defeated opponents twice or thrice their age to rule the men’s and women’s open division.

Heo, who is currently playing in two ITF-organized events in Korea, improved his head-to-head match up with veteran tennis instructor Peter Loyola to 5-3 after a 6-3, 6-3 win in the finals, while Minor did not drop a set in scoring consecutive wins over Jodel Fernandez and Matty Buenaventura.

Christian Miller and Theecel Minor ruled the boys’ and girls’ 13-and-under divisions, while Chris Cajigan and Emily Jones duplicated the feat in the 9-and-under class.

Miller downed Jones, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5, while Theecel bested eight-year-old Neghar Rastguiy, 6-2, 6-0. Cajigan defeated Colin Ramsey, 6-1, while Emily Jones scored back-to-back wins over Sakura Imaya, 6-3, and Coconut Classic champion Tammy Ackerman, 6-2.

Lope Padilla and Buenaventura ruled the men’s and women’s 4.0 divisions after beating Nanding Cajigan, 6-2, 7-5, and Lydia Tan, 6-2, 6-1, while Dodong Salinas topped the men’s 3.0 after winning by default against Manny Jardinero.

PIC, Pacific Trading Co., Stay Well Insurance, and Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino are some of the sponsors of the tournament.
