Tuesday premiere for new history video
The NMI Council for the Humanities invites the public to attend the premier screening of Sunburst in the South Seas at the Visitors Center Theater, American Memorial Park, Tuesday, April 15, at 6:30pm.
The 60-minute video provides a fascinating overview of the Japanese administration of Micronesia from 1914-1941 with a particular focus on the Northern Mariana Islands.
Sunburst in the South Seas, the third video in a planned six-part History of Micronesia series, was produced by historian Francis X. Hezel, S.J. It was supported, in part, by a Council grant.
The video utilizes rare Japanese film footage shot in Micronesia during the first three decades of the twentieth century and interviews with indigenous residents who experienced Japanese colonial rule first hand.
Fr. Hezel will provide an introductory overview of the project and then answer questions at the conclusion of the screening.
The screening is open to the public and free of charge. Interested individuals are invited to contact Council staff at telephone 235-4785 for additional details. (PR)
