Three separate earthquakes jolt NMI

Three earthquakes, all with magnitudes of 5, jolted the CNMI yesterday morning and afternoon.

The CNMI Emergency Management Office was quick to assure, though, that based on available data, it does not expect any destructive Pacific-wide tsunami.

“There is no tsunami threat to the Marianas,” according to the EMO’s report.

EMO also did not receive report about injuries and damage to property as a result of the temblors.

The first earthquake occurred at 11:28am, about 6.2 miles deep and located at latitude 15.978 degrees north 145.024 degrees east, Sapan region.

EMO said this is about 50 miles west-southwest of Anatahan, 70 miles northwest of Saipan, 75 miles north west of Tinian and 125 miles north of Rota.

The second quake was about 6.2 miles deep and was located at latitude 16.179 degrees north 144.837 degrees east in the Anatahan region.

This is about 55 miles west-southwest of Anatahan, 90 miles northwest of Saipan, 95 miles northwest of Tinian and 140 miles north of Rota.

The last temblor happened at 1:16pm, with a depth of 21.7 miles and located at latitude 16.058 degrees north 144.855 degrees east, Anatahan region.

EMO said this is about 60 miles west-southwest of Anatahan, 80 miles northwest of Saipan, 85 miles northwest of Tinian, and 135 miles north of Rota.
