Park, 2 others victorious in Loyola Tennis
Chris Park and Sakura Imaya won their second age group titles in last Sunday’s May edition of the Loyola Tennis Tournament at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan courts.
Park won the 13-and-under boys’ division while Imaya duplicated the feat in the girls’ 9-and-under class.
Park scored consecutive wins over Chris Cepeda, Jeron Año, and Grant Rhee in the elimination round to earn the first finals berth. He made it 2-0 against Rhee in the finals cruising to an 8-0 decision.
Rhee was coming off a hard-earned win over Chris Cepeda in the semifinals where he needed a tiebreak to earn the second championship slot.
In the battle for third place, Año proved he still had some fuel left in his tank when he needed a tiebreak to complete an 8-7 (7-5) decision against Cepeda.
Imaya also coasted to an easy 6-0 win over Gio Song in the girls’ 9-and-under division.
In December last year, Park claimed the boys’ 13-and-under title after an 8-6 triumph over Kennedy Izuka, while Imaya scored back-to-back lopsided wins over Carol Lee, 8-1, and Gio Hur, 8-0, to claim the girls’ 9-and-under title.
In the boys’ 9-and-under division, Carl Dela Cruz won the title after a 6-2 win over Kevin Rhee. Dela Cruz placed fourth in the December tournament losing to Evzen Pabellon, 7-8 (5-7).
It was the second straight runner-up finish for Rhee after he also lost to Elnathan Wong, 2-8, in last December’s tournament.
Jason Gamboa placed third after beating Alen Cepeda, 6-2, in the consolation match.
The second leg of the tournament will feature Loyola’s older students. The games will be on May 10 and 11 when singles matches will be held for adults.
Loyola would also like to thank all parents for the continuous support they give to their kids.
