Junior netters showed a glimpse of CNMI’s tennis future playing in several tightly fought matches in the 27th Annual Duty Free Shop-Micronesian Tennis Tournament last Sunday at the Pacific Islands Club courts.

Exciting matches were seen in the boys’ 13-and-under singles where finalists Rafael Jones and Jake Lee had to work for their points before beating Christian Miller and Lucas Nutting to arrange a finals showdown.

Jones scored a 6-2, 6-4 upset against good friend and top seed Miller, while Lee needed a first set tiebreak before pulling off a 7-6, 6-1 decision against Nutting.

Other junior netters that won division titles were James Camacho an d Mayuko Arriola (boys’ and girls’ 18-and-under), Ilia Corella (girls’ 13-and-under), Christopher Cajigan and Tammy Ackerman (boys’ and girls’ 9-and-under).

In the doubles events, Jeff Race and Arriola became the tournament’s two-time winners. Arriola added the mixed open/4.0 doubles crown to her singles title when she teamed up with Race in defeating Peter Loyola and Lydia Tan, 6-2, 6-2.

Loyola and Tan were coming off a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 decision against Peter Loken and Vivian Lee in the semifinals.

Race added the men’s open doubles trophy when he joined Loyola in beating Ji Hoon Heo and Nicolas Son, 6-3, 6-3.

Gary Ramsey and Nanding Cajigan needed three sets and a tiebreak in the third set before beating Richard Brostom and Fr. Ryan Jimenez, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, while Thea Minor and Cleofe Santos overcame a first set loss to score a 6-7, 6-0, 6-3 win over Theecel Minor and Tisha Ferrer in the women’s doubles.

Other doubles winners were Dino Jones and Roy Pangelinan (men’s Over-40), Dong Ik Jang and Joseph Jang (men’s 3.0), and Yuri Hatamata and Kentaro Imaya (mixed 3.0/2.0).

The longest-running tennis tournament enters its second phase this weekend with competitions in the junior doubles and adult singles to be played at the PIC courts.
