DPS hiring 20 cops, 16 firefighters, five dispatchers
The Department of Public Safety is hiring 20 police officers, 16 firefighters, and five dispatchers in preparation for the deployment of its police and fire personnel to Middle East.
DPS Commissioner Claudio Norita told Saipan Tribune yesterday that Gov. Benigno Fitial on Monday or Tuesday signed the certification for the hiring of 41 personnel because of the emergency deployment.
Norita said hopefully by mid-June 2008 they can start with the police and firefighters academy and have the graduation in mid-August 2008.
He underscored the need to immediately begin the academy as 32 police officers and firefighters are expected to be leaving for Middle East by July 15, 2008.
“That is the reason why they’re authorizing me to hire these cadets so I can cover the vacancies,” the commissioner pointed out.
Norita said interested cadets should visit the Office of Personnel Management to get the applications.
DPS personnel who have received the Army Reserve’s call to active duty represents nearly 20 percent of the police and fire workforce on Saipan.
In his earlier letter to Fitial, Norita said this deployment call to Kuwait will put manpower drain in the police and fire workforce.
Another problem that DPS is facing is the lack of money to recruit and train new personnel.
A cadet’s training, including equipment, books and instructor fees, reportedly costs about $13,000 to $15,000. In addition, salary costs about $15,000 per cadet.
