GOP issues guidelines for aspiring delegates
The NMI Republican Party will open for submission of letters of intent from those seeking the party’s support in the U.S. congressional race.
The party announced yesterday it would accept letters of intent starting May 23, 2008. The deadline is June 6, 2008, 5pm.
To submit a letter of intent, one must be registered member of the NMI Republican Party. Those who have not yet registered may do so until June 6.
The GOP requires a candidate fee of $7,500 from aspiring delegates.
The party, which is the only local political organization recognized nationally, has tentatively scheduled a primary for July 12, 2008.
To date, Resident Rep. Pete A. Tenorio has come out publicly about his plan to run for delegate. He has asked the GOP to support his candidacy.
The election for the delegate position will take place on Nov. 4, 2008. But the electoral process begins in less than two months. The Election Commission will accept nominating petitions and candidacy documents from July 7 to Aug. 6.
Under the recently enacted delegate law, Northern Marianas will have a representative with limited voting powers to the U.S. House of Representatives. Similar to House members and other delegates, the CNMI delegate will be elected to Congress every two years. He can serve on committees, as well as vote on legislation at the committee level. But floor voting will not be permitted.
In a related development, the NMI Republican Party has elected Ed Tenorio as its new president. The roster of new officers include Charlene Tudela as first vice president, Ross Manglona as second vice president, Alissa Ann Pangelinan as secretary, and Joaquin Villagomez as treasurer.
The precinct clubs are now led by James Cabrera (Precinct 1), Dino S. Palacios (Precinct 2), Skep I. Palacios (Precinct 3), Benigno M. Sablan (Precinct 4), and John Guerrero (Precinct 5).
