…and a tribute to a long time rancher
83 years of age
50-plus years of ranching
Dr. Jose Lujan Chong has been ranching for more than 50 years. His experiences gained as a part-time rancher made him capable of coping with his full-time medical profession. His intent in ranching was not for commercial purposes but as a stress reliever, which turned out to be of great help in assisting his family’s and friends’ needs when time arises, such as wedding, funerals and other cultural activities.
Dr. Chong started out with a few cattle and at one time he was able to obtain a herd of 250. Because of development on Saipan, his pasture moved around from China Town to Lower Navy Hill, Kagman, Marpi, Obyan and eventually back to Marpi.
Due to the limitation of land for grazing, Dr. Chong urges island ranchers to practice better grazing management and to acknowledge the limited resources. He recommends that these practices be recognized for its values not only for meat and money but also as leisure and for a healthy way of living.
Our hats go off to Dr. Chong as a medical doctor who has assisted us with our ailing needs and for also the assistance he has provided to his friends and relatives. (PR)
