Ten students representing different high schools in the CNMI will be competing this morning in the 25th Annual Attorney General’s Cup, all of them females.

The only boy, Grace Christian Academy’s Andrew Orsini, would have made this year’s 11th contestant but he and his family have flown off-island to support his younger brother, Vinni Orsini, at the National Geography Bowl in Washington D.C.

Today’s contestants are Kelsey Reyes from Calvary Christian Academy, April C. Cabanes of Eucon International School, Mercilyn Kaneshi of Kagman High School, Micaela Tenorio Demapan of Marianas Baptist Academy, Adeleyah Mojica of Marianas High School, Ruby Ann R. Venus of Mount Carmel School, Aesha dB. Sablan of Northern Marianas Academy, Dheena Elayda of Rota High School, Richille Vela Denora of Saipan Southern High School, and Genevieve L. Santos of Tinian High School.

Attorney General Matthew T. Gregory is hosting this year’s Attorney General’s Cup Speech Competition.

According to a release from the CNMI Attorney General’s Office, this year’s competition theme is “Should the NMI and Guam Unite as One Marianas to form the 51st state of the Union?” Each of the 10 contestants will stand before a panel of judges and attempt to convince the judges that the position she takes is the most compelling argument.

Last year’s winner was Cyd Xyrene Tribiana from MCS after he delivered an emotional speech on whether the CNMI should renegotiate its Covenant with the U.S.

MHS won the AG’s Cup in 2006, 2005, 2004, 2002, 2000, 1994, 1989, and 1984.

The competition will take place at the Hibiscus Hall of the Fiesta Resort and Spa at 9am. Everybody is welcome to attend.
