EMO: Haze is not due to Anatahan volcano
The CNMI Emergency Management Office, in close consultation with National Weather Service Guam, clarified yesterday that the current hazy weather condition is not related to the volcano of Anathan. The wind direction is from the northeast.
High pressure centered northeast of the Marianas and light upper level winds are helping to circulate industrial pollutants and dust moving off of the Asian mainland southward from the mid-Pacific toward the Mariana Islands. This haze or smog will have only a minor effect on visibility and sky conditions. The Anatahan volcano is currently quiet and is not a factor in producing this haze.
Over the next 24 to 36 hours, rain showers and changes in the upper-level transport winds will help replace the haze with cleaner air of more tropical origin.
All mariners and boaters are reminded to take precautionary measures due to low visibility.
EMO urges the public to continue to tune in to local radio broadcast or local news sources and log in at www.cnmiemo.gov.mp on the Internet for any future development on the Anatahan volcano or any other statements and advisories. [B][I](EMO)
