A Guam-based hotel company has formally taken over Rota Resort and Country Club.

Rota Resort LLC, which assumed control of Rota’s only major resort last Thursday, vows to be aggressive in promoting Rota as a tourist destination.

The first step, according to Rota Resort LLC owner, Hee K. Cho, is to secure flight service to the island. Cho said in a phone interview that his company has reached an agreement with airlines on the continuation of service to Rota.

He said Continental Airlines is expected to operate more frequent charter service from Japan, while Cape Air and Freedom Air will keep their commuter flights to the island at current levels.

Cho declined to detail the agreement with the airlines, but a source privy to the talks said Rota Resort would subsidize the commuter flights by paying a certain dollar amount for the unoccupied seats on each flight.

Cho also said plans are underway to boost marketing efforts in Japan. He said Rota Resort LLC is working with Kinki Nippon Tourist and Continental in promoting the charter service to Rota. The hotel company is also considering participation in marketing programs sponsored by the Japan Association of Travel Agents.

“We will do everything we can to get Rota more exposed in Japan and Korea,” he said.

Cho previously expressed interest in turning Rota Resort into a casino resort. Rota residents approved casino gambling on the island last year.

Cho owns the Alupang Beach Tower, the Holiday Resort and Spa Guam, the Garden Villa Hotel, the Mai’ana Hotel, and Tumon Horizon Condominiums on Guam.
