The CNMI’s very own Jesus Iguel has been selected to represent the region in the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships set from July 8 to July 13 in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Northern Marianas Athletics secretary general Robin Sapong relayed the good news about the 18-year-old Kagman High School student’s selection over the phone during the weekend.

Iguel will see action in the 100m sprint in the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships.

Sapong said Iguel, who competed for the CNMI in the recently concluded and 2008 Oceania Championships, was picked by the IAAF because of his excellent times during the McDonald’s All-Schools Championships as well as the 2008 Oceania Grand Prix.

During the All-Schools, Iguel ran the century dash in 11.5—using a hand timer—in leading Kagman to a first place finish in the high school category. Iguel then reprised his surprising improvement in the 100m by running the event in 11.82 in the 2008 Grand Prix.

Sapong said while Iguel will be the lone CNMI participant in the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships, he will be part of the Oceania team that comprises of 18-and-under athletes from Guam, Palau, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Norfolk Island, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Nauru, and Fiji.

Other up-and-coming athletes from Oceania bound for Bydgoszcz, Poland include Douglas Schmidt (Palau), Isoa Me (Fiji), Kenneth Karosich (Guam), Pasik Tanupo (Tonga), Danny O’Hara (Norfolk Island), Pana Thoma (Nauru), Shirley Vunatut (PNG), Satupi Tasale (Samoa), and Tim Natua (Kiribati).

Sapong said aside from competing in the 2008 Oceania Grand Prix and 2008 Oceania Championships, Iguel also played for the CNMI Big League All-Stars in the 2008 Asia-Pacific Regional Little League Tournament.

The team won the championship of the division after beating the Philippines, 8-7, last Thursday night at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
