An ex-convict was arrested again for allegedly beating up his girlfriend and three other persons at a residence in As Matuis Saturday early morning.

Sydney C. Kani, 27, beat up his girlfriend, who was at that time holding their 10-month-old baby, police said.

Kani was arrested for assault and battery. A $4,000 cash bail was initially imposed for his temporary liberty. A bail hearing was set yesterday afternoon.

Detective Nicholas C. Leon Guerrero Jr. stated in his report that, when he served a copy of the complaint to Kani, the defendant refused to sign and receive the documents, describing them as “s__t.”

Leon Guerrero said police officers responded to As Matuis after they received a call on Saturday at 4:01am about a beating incident.

Officers learned that Kani’s girlfriend and some of her in-laws left their house at 1am that day and went to the USP Club in Garapan where she had two beers.

The group proceeded to Tanapag Beach before heading home. When she and her in-laws arrived at the house, she heard her 10-month-old baby crying. The girlfriend ran into the house and took the baby.

Angry that she came home late, Kani allegedly grabbed her and tried to punch her. The girlfriend ran out the house with the baby, but Kani followed her to the car. He allegedly grabbed her and punched her head. He then allegedly pushed her to the ground and began kicking her. At the time she was still holding the baby.

The girlfriend then ran inside the front passenger of the car with the baby. Kani allegedly continued punching her legs and tried to grab the baby.

Police said Kani also assaulted three other individuals who had tried to stop him from beating her up. The three individuals—one male and two females– suffered bruises in different parts of the body.

In December 2007, police arrested Kani for allegedly beating up his minor girlfriend at their apartment in Tanapag.

It was not clear whether she was the same girl that he allegedly beat up last Saturday.

During a hearing in federal court in July 2000, Kani pleaded guilty to two counts of interference with commerce by robbery in connection with two robbery cases at a poker arcade and a store. He was sentenced to prison.
