The third defendant in the case of conspiracy to steal portions of the metal lighting units from the American Memorial Park wants to proceed with the trial in federal court.

Masaioshy Daikichi Sallem last Thursday signed a waiver of speedy trial in the U.S. District Court for the NMI.

Sallem stated that he wishes to waive his right to a speedy trial. He was with court-appointed counsel Steven Pixley.

Chief Judge Alex R. Munson granted Sallem’s request and set the jury trial for Oct. 14, 2008 at 9am.

Munson ordered that the defendant be allowed to remain at liberty under all the terms and conditions the court had previously set.

Sallem’s co-defendants, Dominic D. Chipwelong and James Ochcha, had already signed plea agreements with the U.S. government and pleaded guilty.

Sallem, Chipwelong, and Ochcha, all Chuukese, were indicted on charges of conspiring to sell government property and theft of government property.

In addition, Ochcha was charged with destruction of a veterans memorial.

The three were accused of engaging in a conspiracy to steal some metal lighting units from the American Memorial Park and selling them to a recycling center in November 2007.
