2007 tax rebates released
Beginning Saturday, some taxpayers on the islands have begun receiving their 2007 tax rebates in the mail.
This came about after Gov. Benigno R. Fitial approved the release of some $3 million in 2007 tax rebates on Friday.
The distribution, representing the first batch of 2007 tax rebate payments, will be distributed to 14,000 taxpayers.
According to Finance Secretary Eloy S. Inos, taxpayers could now pick up their checks in the mail beginning yesterday, while others will get their checks Monday.
Inos said the government will begin distributing 2007 tax rebate checks regularly, initially beginning every two weeks and then on a weekly basis every Friday.
Following the complete disbursement of 2007 tax rebates, the government will go back and ensure the full payment of all 2006 and 2005 rebates.
The issuance of the 2007 tax rebates comes on the heels of the release of some $3 million in 2007 tax refunds last month.
As with the tax refunds, federal stimulus checks, and child tax credits previously released by the Fitial administration, the governor also expects the tax refund and rebate releases to have a positive effect on local consumers and struggling small businesses.
“I am very happy we are able to return money back to our taxpayers on a timely basis,” said Fitial.
“This is a high priority,” said the Governor. (Saipan Tribune)
