HAGATNA, Guam—Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo issued a statement Saturday upon learning of the death of Petty Officer Second Class Anthony M. Carbullido, USN, in Afghanistan.

“I join the people of Guam in mourning the loss of a son of Guam, Petty Officer Anthony M. Carbullido. We extend our sympathies and prayers to his family, friends and loved ones.

“Petty Officer Carbullido was a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We share the burden of his loss with his family and we pray that they will be comforted in knowing that our island community will always remember and honor Anthony for his service,” said Bordallo.

Carbullido, 25, was a Hospital Corpsman assigned to the Naval Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, Ill and performing operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was killed after his convoy hit an improvised explosive device.

A Pacific Daily News story said Carbullido was on his second tour of duty, having been previously deployed to Iraq.

His death brings the island’s casualties to five this year and is the 29th death from the region since the War on Terror began in 2001, according to PDN.

Carbullido was married to Summer Carbullido, who lives in the couple’s home in Chicago. The couple have no children.

In the PDN story, it quoted Carbullido’s father, Anthony Carbullido, as saying that the family was notified early Saturday morning.

“Carbullido’s father said he was told by a Navy chaplain that an improvised explosive device was involved in his son’s death. He said he couldn’t recall the exact date the incident happened,” the story said.

A special Mass was said Saturday night at Mount Carmel Church in Agat. Services will be announced later, according to the family.
