A futsal tournament will kick-off the 2008 season of women’s soccer from Oct. 11 to Dec. 6.

The sponsoring Northern Marianas Islands Football Association Women’s Committee said a boot camp would be held on Sept. 27 and Oct. 4 from 8:30am to 11:30am at the Navy Hill field to open up the futsal tournament, which is actually indoor soccer.

NMIFA said this is also known as the “five aside” and it demands quick reflexes, fast thinking, and accurate ball control.

It is also referred to as the “great skill developer.”

It is played on a basketball style court, with no walls and a low bouncing ball, requiring players to use their skill rather than the ball’s bounce to propel it.

Nick Swaim, the CNMI National Football coach, explains, “Futsal is an excellent method for building skills and it requires very little specialized equipment.

“Futsal is an important aspect of both the Women’s and Men’s national team training.”

Lindsay Davis, chairman of NMIFA Woman’s Committee, encourages, “all women who are interested in football or futsal, physical fitness, and camaraderie with other women through team sports should come and join the league”.

The boot camp is designed to help players learn skills and the rules of futsal.

By attending boot camp, women who have never played the game could give it a try and begin to learn skills before teams are established.

All women regardless of experience, ages 14 and up, are encouraged to participate in the boot camp and register for the league.

Registration will start at 8:30am with an entry fee of $20 that includes a team T-shirt.

The registration fee will be used to cover equipment and team shirt expenses.
