Mix retains crown in SaipanCell/PCA softball
No Ka Oi sported a new name but the strong team that they are famous for remained intact.
Now known as Mix but with the same players, the team outshone SaiPal, 18-4, in the second of two championship games to successfully defend its crown in the 2008 SaipanCell/Palau Community Association slow-pitch softball tournament held yesterday at the Dandan Elementary School Ballfield.
It was a repeat of last year’s championship showdown when No Ka Oi defeated Survivors, who also opted to change their team’s name to SaiPal.
This year, there were five teams that joined the two-day fund-raising tournament. They were Mix, SaiPal, Tebelik Charm, Angels, and Warriors.
Mix was undefeated on the way to the championship game and in the process gained a twice-to-beat advantage over SaiPal.
Mix opened its campaign with a 18-5 victory over the Angels on Saturday and followed it up with a 10-5 win over SaiPal.
Saipal defeated Tebelik Charm, 13-5 and it needed to beat the Warriors, 6-2, to arrange a final showdown with Mix.
SaiPal, thus, scored a 12-8 win over Mix to set-up the winner-take-all match.
Mix had an 11-4 lead after two complete innings behind the successive hits of Roy Celis, Jerry Ayuyu, Manny Sablan, and company at the top of the second.
Warriors, which placed third, reached the semifinal match with Saipal by beating Tebelik Charm, 7-3, and Angels, 5-3.
PCA president Rufino Aguon thanked SaipanCell for its continued sponsorship of the tournament.
The fund they raised in the tournament totaled about $600, including expenses.
“The turnout was good enough for us to be happy. Despite the weather, the show went on as scheduled. Everybody was having fun,” Aguon said.
The champion team won $500 and a trophy.
