Although we, the cultural song crafters of the CNMI, weren’t even formally invited to attend the “Tetseron Konferensian Chamorro” recently held here on Saipan, I am nonetheless gratified that Mayor Juan Tudela publicly acknowledged our existence and the cherishing of our contribution to the preservation of our Chamorro and Carolinian languages by making songs in the vernacular.

The month of October has been proclaimed by Mayor Tudela as the Arts and the Humanities Month. I will treat this month as special, being a Chamorro lyricist and song crafter. I salute all my recording artists and musician colleagues for a job well done. I salute all my fellow Chamorro and Carolinian lyricists of before, now, and the future. Our task is continuous, we cannot stop, ever! The Chamorro language preservation is a tremendous undertaking, but someone has got to do the job. I praise the Lord for all the Chamorro language lyricists and song crafters alike.

So please, at least for the month of October, follow the lead of Mayor Tudela and exalt your Chamorro and Carolinian language music makers. Pizza, McDonald’s, steak dinner, a six-pack will be greatly appreciated. But the most sincere si yu’us ma’asse will be most thanked for.

A warm Pugua Hafa Adai,

Alexandro Sablan Dandan, Saipan
