Save the park’s restroom, pathway

This past weekend, I visited the American Memorial Park’s Micro Beach Pavilion, public restroom and pathway and to my surprise, the public restroom and pathway were permanently closed to the public. The area around the restroom is a disaster. Erosion is the cause of it; yes, I understand that part. The part I did not understand is “why” the heck didn’t anybody do something about it years ago? The National Park Service should have taken action on this issue years ago; after all it is designated as a “national park.”

The map of Saipan has changed due to erosion caused by strong wave action. The National Park Service and the CNMI should have worked together to tackle this problem. If they don’t do nothing about it now, guess what? The public restroom and the pathway will be gone.

I recently heard that our neighboring island of Guam had a similar problem on the southern part of the island, and they have done something about. They put in place non-corrosive steel and large boulders and, eventually, concrete in the area. Now why can’t the National Park Service and CNMI official do something similar like Guam did? Even the island of Oahu, Hawaii had the same problem years ago and they have done something about it years ago as well.

My message to those who have the power to do something about it is: Please take the lead, follow those that can or get the heck out of the way, and let’s put people who can do something about it.
