Red Cross donates 3 care kits
The American Red Cross NMI Chapter, through a grant from the Larry Hillblom Foundation, has donated three Emergency Care Kits to the Marianas Visitors Authority.
According to John Hirsh, executive director of the NMI Chapter, each kit costs approximately $2,000.
The Care Kits are each equipped with an Automated External Defibrillator, an oxygen tank, and a First Aid kit, and will be placed at the three dive locations.
In addition to the kits, the NMI Chapter has trained more than 50 dive masters, instructors, tour guides and security guards in CPR, AED and oxygen administration at no cost.
Both MVA and the NMI Chapter have recognized that it can take some time for advanced medical care to arrive at these remote locations. In the event of a life threatening emergency such as a heart attack, when the first few minutes of care can decide whether a person lives or dies, these kits will increase the victim’s chances of survival. Divers, tourist and other members of the community utilizing the dive sites can feel safer knowing that more members in the community are trained in lifesaving skills and the lifesaving equipment needed is right there for them to use.
