Saipan Major League is scrapping the SML Fall competition and instead will be hosting a Thanksgiving Baseball Tournament next month.

SML coordinator Tony Rogolifoi said that due to the few number of teams that showed interests in joining the fall league, they decided to replace it with their first-ever Thanksgiving tournament.

“A first of its kind, the SML will host a Thanksgiving Baseball Tournament sometime in November. The tournament will host eligible players age 25-and-under,” Rogolifoi said.

Rogolifoi added that cash prizes and other in-kind prizes await top teams and outstanding players.

SML is encouraging players in the Junior, Senior, and Big leagues to form teams and participate in next month’s tournament.

“This tournament will serve as a tune-up for youth players participating in the upcoming Little League program,” Rogolifoi said.

The Saipan Little League Baseball, Inc. had started its organizational meeting this week and might open its 2008 season earlier as scheduled due to the increasing number of teams interested in competing in the SLLB.

SLLB usually opens its season in February, but might start in January as five more squads are likely to join the Major league. Last year, 15 teams joined the Majors.

Teams interested in participating in the Thanksgiving tourney are asked to attend a meeting today at the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium at 12pm.

Rosters, fees, uniforms, opening date, and other details of the tournament will be discussed at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Rogolifoi is also asking teams interested in competing in the 2008 Masters Baseball League to attend an organizational meeting on Oct. 15 at 5pm at the pavilion behind the gym.

The Masters League is set to open later this month with four teams so far have expressed their interests in joining the league. The list include the Tigers, D-9ers, Korean Dreams, and Team Rubak.
