Some members of the Rotary Club of Saipan have expressed concern about the safety of youngsters who are using the club’s latest project, a Skate Park, which has yet to officially open.

The newly constructed $15,000 project is to be inaugurated sometime this month.

In yesterday’s regular meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan, members discussed safety issues after learning that some kids have already begun regularly practicing at the facility

Rotarian Dennis Yoshimoto, who co-chairs the skate park project along with Laurie Peterka, said he would seriously look into this matter.

He said the facility is in fact still under construction. “We’re still waiting for the solar panels that would power the lights around the area,” Yoshimoto explained.

He said the lighting system is the only part of the project that is not completed. He said that once the solar panels arrive and are installed, they would be happy to announce to the public the project’s opening.

Yoshimoto appealed to the kids, saying, “We ask their cooperation and patience.”

The Skate Park, which is the first of its kind on Saipan, is expected to draw more youngsters to this kind of leisure activity.

I-SK8 Society started planning for the skate park project in 2006.

They hired skate park specialist John Glaze from Indonesia in August to oversee the construction of the project.

The Rotary took on the project after realizing the great risks children face when skating on public roads.
