Sex offenders ordered to update registration files

The Sex Offender Registry Unit would like to notify all convicted sex offenders in the CNMI to update registration files before Oct. 24, 2008 by 4:30pm at the SOR office, located at DPS Central Office in Susupe.
The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 provides for the use of federal law enforcement resources—including the U.S. Marshals Service—to assist a State in locating and apprehending non-complaint sex offenders. This act also makes it a federal offense, punishable up to 10 years in prison based upon interstate commerce for sex offenders who have not registered at the jurisdiction they reside and have moved to another state/territory.
Any person convicted of sexual crime is required under Public Law 11-104 to register as sex offenders at the Department of Public Safety. Public Law 11-104 mandates DPS, Adult Probation and the Office of Parole to register, update, photograph, fingerprint and keep on file all information about these offenders and to share, coordinate and update other affected law enforcement agencies.
The month of October is the third quarter of the year that the Sex Offender Registry Unit has scheduled for these monitoring operations and compliance checks of all Offenders. Due to the size of the community in the CNMI, Offenders easily change addresses, contact numbers, vehicles and employment status; therefore, the unit deems it necessary to conduct these operations in order to keep offenders complaint with their registry information.
All offenders who are in violation of Public Law 11-10 are advised to update their registration documents as to avoid a year of imprisonment and up to $1,000.00 in fines.
