Tough Love MTB race Sunday
The third edition of the Tough Love Mountain Bike race will be
held this Sunday with riders racing from Micro Beach to the Mt. Tapochao.
Participants are asked to be at the starting point on or before
6:30am, as the race will begin at 7am. Registration will be at the pavilion near the Micro Beach bathrooms.
Entrance fee is $10 for NMITF members and $15 for non members.
If a participant decides to join NMITF for an annual fee of
$25 he/she gets a free entry to the Tough Love race.
Last year, 20 riders joined the MTB race with Nate “The Snake” Hawley and Mieko Carey topping the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.
Participants started racing at Micro Beach, pedalled up to Mt. Tapochao through the Micro Beach Road and headed to Navy Hill Road. The pack turned left on the dirt road heading to Saipan’s highest peak where timers Kanae Quinn and Harumi Sugihashi were waiting at the finish line.
Hawley completed the race in 34 minutes and 35 seconds to finish 1:38 ahead of second placer Andrew Black (35:33).
Steve Smith won the inaugural Tough Love race with his time of 32:03. Hawley also joined the first Tough Love MTB event, timing in at 35:54.
Florian Braig finished third overall last year with his 36:28 while Lewie Tenorio placed fourth in 37:09. Tyce Mister came in fifth, 37:36; while race organizer Russ Quinn recorded a time of 38:26 to finish sixth.
Butch Sublemente was at seventh spot in 38:48.
Carey was eighth overall, but first in the women’s division with her time of 39:36, which broke Kimiko Hasagawa’s record of 47:02 in 2006.
Hasegawa (56:20) settled for a runnerup finish in the women’s
division, while Melanie Daly finished third wth her 1:04.51.
Other finishers in last year’s race were Alberto Catalina, Greg
Moretti, Cesar Fortaleza, Joseph Lieberato, Federico Fernandez,
Dirk Sharer, Kevin Carey, Florence Antonio, Mike Johnson, and Alexander Racoma.
