Marianas Medical takes futsal lead
Marianas Medical Center ended Aon Insurance’s winning run in the 2008 NMIFA Women’s Futsal Fall League Saturday at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium.
MMC and Aon had only four players each for the game, but the latter managed to squeeze out a 6-0 win despite its depleted lineup.
Some of MMC and Aon players failed to report to NMC as they had to go to Hopwood Junior High School to help the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association in organizing the 2008 NMIFA Youth Festival of Football.
The loss was Aon’s first in six games, dropping the team to second place in the team standings. Aon cruised to its fourth straight victory, two weeks ago after outclassing Marianas Tech, 2-1. Aon now has a 4-1-1 win-loss-draw record for nine points.
Grabbing the No. 1 spot from Aon was Marianas Medical which has earned 10 points with the latter’s 5-1 record. Prior to its victory over Aon, Marianas Medical slipped past Matthew Smith’s Law Office, 2-1.
In other results last weekend, MTI bounced back from its loss to AON via a 2-1 triumph over Wild Bill’s.
Marine Tech nailed its second win in six games and now has four points. But it remained in fifth place in the team standings behind Hardt Eye, which is still winless in five matches.
Hardt Eye was to meet Matthew Smith’s Law Office in the third game Saturday, but results of the match were unavailable at press time.
Hardt Eye’s attempt to enter the win column two weeks ago was foiled by Wild Bill’s, which pulled off a 2-1 victory.
Wild Bill’s is currently in third place in the team standings with its six points winning three of its six matches.
Games in the futsal league are played every Saturday, from 8:30am to 11:30am. The league has a round-robin format in the regular season, while the format in the playoffs has yet to be decided.
This is the first women’s futsal league in the CNMI. Futsal is an indoor football game with teams having five players each on the court. It demands quick reflexes, fast thinking, and accurate ball control. Games are played in a basketball-style court, with no walls and a low-bouncing ball, requiring players to use their skill rather than the ball’s bounce to propel it.
