Human Rights Day Mass at Mt. Carmel Cathedral today
A special Mass will be celebrated late afternoon today at the Mt. Carmel Cathedral in Chalan Kanoa in observance of International Human Rights Day.
In a statement, the Mount Carmel Cathedral parish and the Mercedarian sisters in Chalan Kanoa said they will be joining the universal church in observing the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Mass will start at 6pm. The congregation is requested to bring candles to be offered during the Mass.
“When we light these candles, we remember those who are in prison, those who have been denied basic human dignity, survivors of torture (emotional, spiritual, or physical), and human rights victims, who have gone before us,” said the statement from parish priest Ryan Jimenez.
It was on Dec. 10, 1948, that the United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Jimenez recalled that Pope Benedict XVI spoke about the founding principles of the United Nations in his public address to the UN General Assembly on April 8 this year.
These principles include “the desire for peace, the sense of justice, the respect of the dignity of the person, cooperation and humanitarian assistance as expressions of the just aspirations of the human spirit.”
Jimenez said in the statement that the season of Advent is a special time to pray and to promote basic human rights.
“The Catholic Church’s social teachings continue to call upon the faithful to be advocates of promoting human dignity because each person is created in the image and likeness of God, “ Jimenez said.
