Dr. Robert Underwood, president of the University of Guam, will be the guest speaker in tonight’s discussions on cultural diversity in the Marianas at the American Memorial Park Auditorium.

The Northern Marianas Council for the Humanities organized this community forum, which starts at 6:30pm.

The forum’s topic is titled “The Marianas Cultural Diversity: Melting Pot or Salad Bowl.”

NMCH said this lively discussion would be about whether cultural groups in the Marianas are truly melting together, “as had been boasted through various marketing and promotional literature” or if they exist separately and within their own subgroups “like the ingredients of a salad bowl.”

NMCH had invited community and local cultural associations and organizations to join the panel of discussants to share their perspectives and experiences.

Also invited were representatives from the high student cultural groups to share their views on the issue.

After giving his message, Underwood would then serve as facilitator during the open forum.

Questions that would be expected to be resolved include the following topics:

-Do you believe that cultural melting does occur in the Marianas?

-How are the different ethnic groups on the islands affecting each other?

-How is the introduction of new cultures and traditions changing the Marianas?

-What impact will the second or third generation of migrants have on the Marianas?
