CUC starts first streak in women’s softball
The long break gave Commonwealth Utilities Corp. enough power to stun defending champion Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, 11-10, at the resumption of action in the women’s division of the 2008 Inter Government/Business Softball League Monday at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Pangelinan Ballfield.
The victory was second in a row for CUC and it was the team’s first string of victories following a 0-4 start. CUC won its first game against Finance, 12-2, on Dec. 1 and the former had not played since then. CUC was set to face Commonwealth Health Center on Dec. 19 before the league took a holiday break, but the match was called off and was rescheduled for last night.
Jenny Palacios, who replaced Roquita Norita at the bottom of the seventh inning, scored the winning run on a Sam Decena single.
Nadia Saralu scored on a Rosel Magofna sacrifice fly at the top of the last inning to put DCCA in the lead, 10-9.
At the bottom of the seventh, pitcher Dolorina Panuelo led off for CUC, singled, and later scored on a Mel Camacho single.
Palacios batted second, singled, and advanced to second on third batter Annabelle Magofna’s sacrifice fly.
With two outs and Palacios on third, Decena stepped up to the plate and connected on the winning hit.
DCCA absorbed its second straight loss and dropped to a 3-3 record.
As a consolation, DCCA performed better at-bat going 18-for-39 for a .462 batting average. CUC went 18-for-40 for a .450 batting average.
Evelyn Kani and Semi Simrani both hit 3-for-4 at the plate with the former making four RBIs, a double, and triple, and the latter recording three RBIs.
