A high surf advisory remains in effect in the CNMI until 6pm today, Jan. 7, due to large north swells from a storm east of Japan a few days ago that continue to move through the area.

High surf will affect exposed reefs and beaches on north and west facing reefs producing dangerous rip currents.

The Emergency Management Office warned the public to expect hazardous surf of 9-11 feet on north facing reefs and 7-9 feet on west facing reefs through Wednesday. The surf is expected to subside below hazardous levels tonight.

“Due to the rising seas and surf in our region, [EMO] is strongly advising the public—especially beachgoers, fishermen, tourist, swimmers, divers and surfers—that there will be a high risk of rip currents along north facing reefs. Rip currents can be life threatening to anyone entering the water,” EMO said in a statement. (EMO)
