CADA reports ‘minimal’ drop in sales in 2008
Automobile sales dropped slightly by 5.85 percent in calendar year 2008, as the Commonwealth Auto Dealers Association sold 595 units last year compared to 632 in the January-December period in 2007.
CADA spokesman Douglas Brennan said the group remains optimistic despite the drop in sales last year.
“All things considered, the 2007 to 2008 drop of 5.85 percent is minimal when compared to recent declines in some other local industries and the double-digit declines in the local auto market from the previous two years. I think CADA as a whole did an admirable job staying close to even with 2007 sales figures. I hope we do as well or better in 2009,” he said.
The 595 automobiles driven off the showrooms and parking lots of Microl Corp., Joeten Motors, and Triple J Motors were made up of 323 cars, 59 trucks, 45, vans, 162 sport utility vehicles, and six Blue Bird school busses.
Microl Corp. continued to lord it over its two competitors in 2008—selling 283 units to give the San Jose dealership a 47.56 percent share of the market. In all, Microl Corp. sold 178 cars, 15 trucks, 25 vans, and 65 SUVs in 2008.
It was a 1.39-percent drop in unit sales in 2007, which saw Microl Corp. unload 287 units.
Joeten Motors is second in the number of units sold last year at 192, which translates to 32.27 percent of the market. The Oleai dealership went on to sell 81 cars, 37 trucks, 16 vans, and 58 SUVs last year.
Total units sold last year represent a 7.87-percent increase in sales from 2007, which saw Joeten Motors sell only 178 automobiles.
Triple J Motors sold a total of 120 automobiles last year—made up of 64 cars, seven trucks, four vans, and 39 SUVs—for a 20.17-percent share of market.
In 2007, Triple J Motors sold 167 units, which means the company experienced a 28.14-percent drop in sales in 2008.
Microl Corp. sells Toyota and Chevrolet, while Joeten Motors sells Nissan, Ford, Honda, and Kia. Triple J Motors sells Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Suzuki, Subaru, and Mazda.
