Zack Cruz crowned 2008 Bing Prince of the Lanes
Zack Cruz won only once in the 12 monthly roll-offs last year, but came out the biggest winner of 2008 after ruling the season finale of the Bing Energy Drink Prince/Princess of the Lanes Sunday at the Saipan Bowling Center.
Cruz claimed the 2008 Bing Prince of the Lanes title besting three other youth bowlers in the step-ladder finals.
The April Bing Prince of the Lanes was paired with two-time monthly winner J.D. Torres (January and September) in the semifinals with Cruz pulling off a 174-165 victory to advance to the title match.
In the other semis pairing, Leanne Yarobwemal, who never won a monthly plum in 2008, stunned nine-time winner Raphael Zapanta, 199-153.
But Yarobwemal ran out of magic in the championship game, which Cruz convincingly won, 188-118.
The newly-crowned Prince topped the six-game roll-off, which determined the Top 4 bowlers to advance in the step-ladder finals.
Cruz knocked down a total of 1,112 pins for an average of 185.33 pinfalls. He recorded 180s in Games 1, 2, and 4 (183, 189, and 181), posted his lowest scored in Game 3 (155), but finished strong in the last two games tallying 195 in Game 5 and 209 in Game 6.
In second place was Zapanta, who won the roll-offs in February, March, May, June, July, August, October, November, and December.
Zapanta totaled 1,106 pinfalls in six games for an average of 184.33 pinfalls. He started strong with 221 and 224 pinfalls in Games 1 and 2, before slowing down in the last four games (177, 176, 114, and 194).
Yarobwemal claimed the No. 3 spot with her 946 pinfalls and average of 157.67 pinfalls. Her best game was in Game 5 posting 224 pinfalls.
Torres booked the last ticket to the step-ladder finals with his total of 931 pinfalls and average of 155.17. He started slow with 125 pinfalls in Game 1, found his form in Game 2 (179) and tallied 628 pinfalls in the last four games (139, 150, 162, 176).
Four other youth keglers competed in the six-game roll-off qualifier. The list include Marion McKenzie (905 pinfalls), Troy Verdaguer (795), Nikko Gutierrez (753), and Marcel McKenzie (670).
