A pedestrian was killed when two vehicles struck him one after the other along Beach Road in front of the Marianas High School in Susupe Tuesday night.

The victim, Rodriquez Jonas Suka, 42, a Chuukese, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Commonwealth Health Center at 10:26pm.

Suka is the first fatality in a vehicular accident this year in the CNMI. He is the fifth fatality, however, in three vehicular accidents that all occurred along Beach Road, Susupe in the past three months.

Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said yesterday that no one was cited in Tuesday night’s accident as the two male drivers—Chang Eon Ahn, 47, and Yiming Xiong, 34, were not under the influence of alcohol and were not speeding.

Ogumoro said police are still looking into whether Suka was drunk.

“The weather was clear and the road surface, including the shoulder, was dry,” Ogumoro said.

She said that on Tuesday at 10:15pm, DPS received a report of an auto-pedestrian crash along Beach Road next to the Marianas High School.

Based on preliminary investigation, a white 2006 Lexus 5 wagon being driven by Ahn was on the inner northbound lane along Beach Road when it collided with Suka.

After hitting Suka, Ahn’s vehicle immediately stopped on the outer northbound lane. Several seconds later, a blue 2003 Toyota Echo being driven by Xiong and traveling north on the inner northbound lane also collided with the victim, who was lying within the vehicle’s lane. Xiong’s car came to a rest north of Suka.

Medics immediately transported the victim to CHC, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ogumoro said the Lexus car had moderate damage underneath the left front portion, while the Toyota Echo had minor damage underneath the left front portion.

“Further investigation of this case is currently being conducted. More information will be provided as soon as new information becomes available,” Ogumoro said.
