Action in the SSC 2009 Virtual Heptathlon Meet will start today at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi.

The virtual meet will have SSC bets competing against swimmers from the Bahamas and Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan. The event is called virtual meet as participants need not to swim in one venue on the same date, and results are sent via email to determine the top performers in each event.

It was also called a heptathlon meet having 10 events lined up in the competition, namely the 100m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 200m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle, and 100 butterfly.

SSC treasurer Lisa Kimball said more than 20 SSC swimmers are joining the meet, while Tsunami Saipan has 22 representatives.

Former SSC coach Michael Stewart has his swimmers from Bahamas entered in the virtual meet, but Kimball was not informed of the number of entries.

Each participant will get points based on how they finished in the 10 events. The faster the time is the higher the points a swimmer gets. The participant to get the most points will earn the High Point award, which will be given to various age groups.

Last year’s virtual meet featured around 100 swimmers from Japan, the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Saipan.

Tsunami Saipan’s Rezne Wong had 655 points to win the boys’ 15-and-over age group, while SSC’s Abigail Martinsen gained 320 points to take home first place in the girls’ 9-10 division. Teammate Victoria Chentsova came away with 225 points to finish second.

International Buccaneers of Japan dominated last season’s virtual meet.

Kelly Moodie collected a heptathlon record of 665 points in the boys’ 13-14 division. Other Buccaneers swimmers who won their respective division were Alexis McCoy, Anna Saber, Kana Moodie, Shawma Chun, Mokhtar Al-Yamani, and Yutaro Sahara.
