Crackdown nets alleged 7-year overstayer
The Division of Immigration’s crackdown against suspected illegal aliens has resulted in the arrest Tuesday night of an alleged seven-year overstayer.
Chenghaun Xu, Chinese, was brought to the Superior Court yesterday afternoon for a bail hearing after Immigration filed a deportation case against him.
Associate Judge Ramona V. Manglona set a $1,000 cash bail for Xu’s temporary liberty.
Manglona ordered the respondent to appear in court on March 19 at 2pm to explain why he should not be deported from the Commonwealth.
After listening to the testimony of Immigration investigator Nick Reyes, the judge found probable cause for the warrantless arrest of Xu.
According to Reyes, while they were conducting “compliance monitoring” operation against suspected illegal aliens in western Garapan, they spotted a woman entering a vehicle believed to be operating as an illegal taxicab.
Reyes said they stopped the vehicle and found out that Xu has no work permit. He later discovered that the respondent’s work permit expired in March 2002.
The investigator told Saipan Tribune that Xu was not held for operating an illegal taxi because they had no sufficient evidence.
