Geckos sweep first round, Eagles soar

Saipan International School swept its first round assignment after beating host Calvary Christian Academy, 41-16, yesterday in the ongoing 2009 Coalition of Private Schools Sports Association basketball league.

The win gave the Geckos a 5-0 record in the boys division, while the loss was CCA’s fourth in five games.

Rafael Jones and Chris Camacho finished with 12 points each to lead the Geckos, who posted their biggest lead of 26 points at the end of third quarter, 36-10, for yet another lopsided win.

Harrison Smith scored four points, while four other Geckos added two points each, including Alex Chung, Bo Barry, Crosby Shultz, and Bill Song.

Jin Han Yoon led CCA with six, Ji Hoon Choi shot four, while Zion Alamer, Albert Lee, and Yue Jin Kim added two points each.

“We will just play our game one at a time. We’re working hard to win each game,” Geckos coach Rick Limkenhelt said after the match.

The Geckos, who finished third last year, also won against Saipan Community School last Jan. 22 (54-3), Seventh Day Adventist last Jan. 27 (55-2), Mt. Carmel School last Jan. 29 (45-25), and Grace Christian Academy last Feb. 3 (55-34).

[B]GCA 22, SDA 7 (Girls)[/B]

Host GCA repeated over SDA, 22-7, in the girls division following its 33-7 win during their first meeting last Jan. 30.

With the victory, the Lady Eagles maintained a perfect 6-0 record.

Kallie O’Connor led all scorers with six points for the Lady Eagles. Three of her teammates added four points each, including Crystalline Cristobal, Chezka De Luna, and Angela Velasco. Julie Muna and Jimaela Ham contributed two points each.

Jacinta Richards added three points, while Erin Belle Mendiola and Danessa Taylor had two each for SDA, which remained winless after six straight games.

[B]GCA 48, SDA 9 (Boys)[/B]

In the boys division, the GCA Eagles nailed its third win in five games over SDA, 48-9.

The undermanned SDA, which played the entire game with only five players, has yet to post a win this year after losing all its first round assignments.

On the other hand, 10 players who were sent on the court scored for the Eagles, including Ken Arejola (10 points), Genesis Manglona (8), Kim Alvarado (6), Peter Camacho (6), and Joseph Sablan (6).

Patrick Reyes added four, while four others came up with two points each. They were Tim De la Rosa, Khmmer Sugue, Mark Salvador, and Brandon Lorenz.

Scorers for SDA were Jong Woo Kim (4), Tyler Palacios (2), and Vincent Iba (2).
