GUAM—Friends of the Crime Lab, Inc. a registered 501(c) 3, has released its strategic plan for 2009.

Its goals for the coming year are to identify fundraising targets and solidify efforts to raise the $5 million needed to build the capacity of the Crime Lab to include DNA, Toxicology, and other equipment and training.

It also intends to host a Regional Forensic Science Symposium in November 2009.

Joey Lopez, Sr., President of Friends of the Crime Lab said, “To date the board has set the framework for the organization, made significant progress with courtesy calls to relevant stakeholders, and set the direction for 2009.”

“We are working with the Judiciary, our elected officials, the Guam Police Department and our educational institutions as well as with crime lab and crime prevention experts to continue to pinpoint where we can best direct our energies.

“Our program reflects the needs of the community and is designed to support the newly constructed Crime Lab which is due to open in the near future. Thanks to former senator Frank Ishizaki, advisor to the board; we have made contact around the region and in the U.S. Mainland to set the wheels in motion for a symposium to identify forensic needs in our area and how we can meet those needs.”

Lopez said Friends of the Crime Lab has received favorable feedback on available grants and sources of funding it might apply for to further its stated aims, and was additionally deep into a writing a business plan.

“We are a fledgling organization that would prefer to channel our energies to straightforward and identified goals that we can reach this year.”
