IT&E rallies past Quichocho Law Office
IT&E pulled off a come-from-behind 96-90 victory in its ejection-marred game against Quichocho Law Office in the 2008-2009 BANMI/Budweiser Basketball League Friday night at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
A bench-clearing altercation erupted in the last 12.1 seconds of the game after both camps traded heated words, forcing league officials to throw four players and two coaches out of the playing court.
League commissioner Gabriel White said there had been intense exchanges of words in the closing minutes of the neck-and-neck game. After a Quichocho basket cut IT&E’s lead to two, 90-92, players unfortunately lost patience and started pushing each other, and soon coaches Jun Concepcion and Marvin Deocares entered the court and joined the fray.
Cooler heads quickly stepped in preventing further altercation, but still both teams had casualties in the end with Jon Artates and Bernard Montano of IT&E joining Deocares out of the playing court. Quichocho Law Office’s Jun Pantaleon, Mike Umali, and Concepcion were also thrown out of the Ada Gym.
Two free throws each from Jun Estolas and Edzel Mendoza sealed the win for IT&E.
IT&E entered the fourth quarter behind by eight points, 66-74. A 31-17 run in the fourth quarter allowed IT&E to grab the lead and the win, its third in four games.
Quichocho Law Office dropped to 1-1 record.
Estolas led IT&E’s rally in the fourth period making nine in the payoff canto. Gyles Ruluked, who was absent in first half, also helped the team’s cause making six of his 10 markers in the fourth quarter.
IT&E took a 20-16 lead behind Mendoza’s nine points in the firth period. But a barrage of triples from Bonbon Cadagat and Ernie Moises and consecutive inside baskets from Darwin Barbo put Quichocho in front at halftime, 46-43.
Cadagat and Barbo continued to do the damage for Quichocho in the third period to preserve the lead before IT&E worked its way back into the game in the payoff period.
