Maria Castro is a mother of three kids who always wanted to pursue her studies. After years of devoting time for her family, she enrolled at Northern Marianas College with her son. The mother-and-son tandem is a unique experience for NMC. Serving as an inspiration to many on campus, the mother-cum-student shares her thoughts about family and education.

Question: What motivated you to continue and pursue a college degree despite being a mother of three?

Answer: My motivation was my children. I was compelled to further my education because I needed to be compatible with my kids’ work. As a mother of a three, I wanted to ensure that when my children leave their classroom and come home, they can depend on me to aid them with the information they need to satisfactorily complete their school task. Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs, but it is also the most rewarding. I see the rewards in my children when they excel in school.

Question: Are there any notable or remarkable experiences that you will never forget during your days in school?

Answer: I enjoy my classes at NMC, and my most notable experiences were the knowledge and skills I gained from taking Rik Villegas’ and Wil Maui’s (instructors in the Business Department) classes. I really enjoyed Principles of Customer Service and Introduction to Macro & Micro Economics taught by Will Maui. NMC’s Student Support Services Program also provided me with tools/materials and supplies and services to help me reach my goal. The SSS Program has many wonderful tutors that assist students with their classes.

Question: What specific adjustments did you do to accomplish these two tasks—as a mother and as a regular student?

Answer: It was not easy being a full-time mom and a full-time student, but when you set your priorities and manage your time well, nothing is impossible. I took classes that did not conflict with my kids’ schedules. As a mother, my children are my first priority, so my schoolwork are taken cared of when the kids are put to bed.

Question: How did your family react to the idea of you going back to the classroom?

Answer: At first, my kids thought I was joking when I told them I was taking classes at NMC. My son, who is now in college, was worried about what his friends will think, so I told him that being in college with him should not interfere with his goals. I told him to stay focused on his goals, as I will with mine.

Question: What are your plan after getting your degree?

Answer: I will use my degree to find a job in the management field.

Question: The greatest advantage you get from your education?

Answer: Acquiring new information and skills is a great asset to have; everyday we learn something new, and one great way to advance your skills and abilities is through education. Now, I am more confident in myself and am happy when I am able to help my kids with their schoolwork, most especially when I see good progress in their report cards.
