Twelve million radio listeners in Russia recently had the opportunity to learn about the destination appeal of the Northern Mariana Islands through a six-minute feature aired two weeks ago on Pevoe Popularnoe Radio.

The radio report was filed March 6 by station journalist Tatiana Starchikova, who visited the tropical islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota in late February and early March.

During her five-day stay, Starchikova visited and dined at several hotels, took a tour of the Saipan’s scenic and historic sites, visited a local waterpark, toured Managaha Island’s white sand beaches and turquoise water, and caught a cultural dinner show. To learn more about indigenous Chamorro and Carolinian culture and history, Starchikova interviewed assistant general manager Gordon Marciano of tour company PDI.

A day on Tinian included an island tour of prehistoric, carved limestone monoliths at Taga Latte Stone Park, World War II historic sites, and other locations, as well as lunch at the local hotel and casino. The final day of her trip was spent exploring the island of Rota, renowned for its natural beauty and opportunities to experience indigenous Chamorro culture.

“We consider it a strong indication of interest among Russians for a Moscow radio station to send a journalist to the NMI—at their own cost, no less—to find out what makes Saipan, Tinian and Rota such an attractive destination,” said Marianas Visitors Authority managing director Perry Tenorio. “So far, we continue to see more visitors from Russia this year than last, and they continue to contribute significantly to our tourism economy.”

Pevoe Popularnoe Radio targets women ages 25-45 in the Moscow region with programs focused on music, culture, travel, food, health and other information. The radio feature is valued at up to U.S.$100,000. (MVA)
