The Department of Public Safety yesterday asked all persons convicted of a sexual crime in the CNMI to contact DPS as soon as possible for their registration as sex offenders.

The DPS Sex Offender Registry Unit is currently reviewing the papers of 122 convicted sex offenders.

DPS spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said all sex offenders in the Commonwealth who have not registered or updated their registration should do so.

Any person convicted of a sexual crime is required to register as sex offenders under Public Law 11-104.

The law mandates DPS, Adult Probation, and the Office of Parole to register, update, photograph, fingerprint, and keep on file all information about these offenders and to share, coordinate, and update other law enforcement agencies.

Ogumoro said all offenders who are in violation of the law are advised to update their registration documents to avoid a year of imprisonment and up to a $1,000 fine.

Ogumoro said any person with questions may contact Police Officers Jason Tarkong and Kelly Camacho at the DPS Sex Offender Registry Unit at 664-9026.

“For those living on Tinian, you may contact Police Officer Wally Villagomez at 433-9222, and for those living on Rota, you may contact Police Officer Jonathan Garces at 532-9526,” Ogumoro said.

DPS underscored the importance of sex offenders who believe that their criminal records are already cleared to contact DPS so their names will not longer appear on the Registry.
