Immaculate heart of Marpi

It is disturbing to hear and especially see the quick destruction of flora and fauna of our beloved north side. Marpi is known for tourist attractions and other outdoor activities for us locals. Should we welcome tourists in our brochures that we have housing in the area? From a bird’s eye view off the cliffs I wouldn’t want anything to mar the scenery as I look down below. Marpi is almost what you would call a sanctuary, a place to get away from the fast paced modernization on the south of the island. Our thinning jungles throughout the island is what we have left and destroying acres of it is just contributing to it.

Do you remember years back when film producers were going to film Windtalkers on Saipan starring Nicolas Cage, the film about the island invasions of World War II? Instead of filming here, it was filmed in Hawaii because with Marpi having a modern look, it would just not work. Our island does not have a rainforest, so leave what’s left of it. Lush vegetation doesn’t grow overnight and will take decades to recreate on its own.

I am beginning to think that the government is an invasive species rather than the iy scarlet gourd that kills the jungles. If you ever listen to the song “planet earth” from Pacific Islander singer Oshean, he lays out the details of modernization and its effects in the near future. His songs of preservation won him international fame. Why can’t we do the same? We can’t because the government’s playing another tune.

There are a lot of Kagman homestead lots. Lots that were given to applicants who failed to build a home or even made an effort to build one. The lots could easily be given to other applicants waiting in line. It clearly goes to show that our government just doesn’t give a hoot. I demand our legislators to do something about this disgusting uncalled-for move. I guess the only thing to do is create a human barricade to block these bulldozers.

As activists in other countries are trying to prevent deforestation, we are trying to encourage it. A government without a head is no head at all. What do you think?
