Former Council for Developmental Disabilities director Antonio Camacho Chong pleaded guilty yesterday to embezzling Council property worth at least $5,000.

The U.S. government, represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk W. Schuler, charged the 49-year-old Chong with one count of embezzlement from a program receiving federal funds.

At yesterday’s hearing, Chong waived the indictment and pleaded guilty.

U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex R. Munson accepted Chong’s plea and set the sentencing for July 21, 2009 at 9am.

Munson allowed the temporary release of Chong on a $10,000 unsecured bond plus other conditions.

Schuler stated in the charging information that on April 25, 2008, Chong, then employed by the Council, embezzled property worth at least $5,000.

Schuler said the property was provided by federal monies to the Council that was to be used for work-related travel expenses.

Court documents did not mention specifically what property was embezzled.
