The CNMI Emergency Management Office has elevated its volcano alert level after receiving reports of increased volcanic activity on Pagan Island in the Northern Islands.

In a statement issued yesterday, EMO said it first received a call regarding the volcanic activity from Pagan at 6pm Wednesday. EMO consulted with the U.S. Geological Services and the National Weather Service in Guam, which observed a plume of black and white, possible ash and gas emitting from the volcano on Pagan.

EMO said it contacted a vessel named MV San Antonio that was on Pagan at the time to verify the situation.

“According to the captain, the plume is about twice the size of Mt. Pagan,” said the EMO statement.

The volcano alert level right now is just “advisory” and the color code is “yellow.”

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is urging the public to tune in to local radio broadcasts or local news sources and log in at www.cnmiemo.gov.mp on the Internet for further statements and advisories. (EMO)
