Gracie Barra Marianas Academy received a large dose of high-end instruction last March as the academy was visited by one of the Philippines’ most distinguished and decorated martial arts instructors, Alvin Aguilar.

A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Aguilar held two private instructional sessions at the As Lito-based martial arts facility. During the sessions he provided students of Gracie Barra Marianas with deeper technical knowledge and helped them close the gap on other techniques.

Founded in 2005 by sensei Caesar Whitt, Gracie Barra Marianas’ lineage falls under grand master Carlos Gracie Jr. and instructionally under BJJ World Champion Marcio Feitosa, with whom Aguilar has also trained with.

From his deep sense of advancing the art, Aguilar pledged to work with Gracie Barra Marianas for more instructional visits either by himself or from any of his top students from the Philippines. His impression of Gracie Barra Marianas was that the students showed excellent discipline and fundamentals with many senior students impressing him at a higher level.

“There are some guys here who can go really far, we just need to continue to work hard, ” he said.

Aguilar’s visit was made possible via personal contact by IT&E, a major sponsor of Gorilla Warfare MMA who sent the invitation to Aguilar and his wife Bubbles.

The visit allowed the Aguilars to take a short respite from their own MMA promotional business in the Philippines, the famous URCC. As president and founder of the URCC—Universal Reality Combat Challenge—as well as a self defense instructor for the Philippine Armed Forces among many others, Aguilar has little time for himself making his visit a truly unique opportunity.

The tandem of IT&E and Gorilla Warfare made sure the Aguilars’ first visit to Saipan was both a memorable and pleasurable experience by making room for scenic visits, water sports, nights out at Saipan’s hot spots, and a VIP appearance at the wildly successful “Battle Ready” MMA event held last March 28.
