Tomokane’s homer sends DCCA to finals
Pete Tomokane starred in Department of Community and Cultural Affairs’ gutsy 15-14 comeback win against Freedom Air in the semifinals of 2009 Budweiser Inter-Government Slow-pitch Softball League Monday night at the Capital Hill Ballfield.
Playing like a wounded tiger following their first defeat of the season to the Beach Boys last week, the defending champions rallied from a 11-14 deficit after six and a half innings to the chagrin of a visibly stunned Freedom Air team.
Tomokane blasted a three-run homer in the seventh to send DCCA to the finals where they will meet familiar foe Beach Boys starting tomorrow night at 7:30pm.
DCCA, however, enters the championship series in a bit of a handicap as Beach Boys has twice-to-beat advantage in the championship.
The Beach Boys became the first team to score a victory against DCCA. Their 20-7 win sent DCCA to the loser’s bracket and in the process earned a twice-to-beat advantage in the championship match.
Finance and Northern Marianas College will dispute the title in the women’s division starting at 6:30pm. Finance also had the edge with its own twice-to-beat incentive against NMC.
In the event that DCCA will win against the beach Boys, the two teams will meet anew in a winner-take-all match for the crown.
The game will be played also on Thursday night.
The same thing will happen in the women’s division finals’ clash between Finance and NMC.
Presentation of special awards and championship trophies will follow immediately after the 2009 champions will be determined.
The Beach Boys were undefeated in the playoffs with wins over P&S, (19-17), No Zone, (19-17), and DCCA in that order.
DCCA took the pennant with a perfect 19-0 regular season record.
In the playoffs, the defending champions opened its campaign with wins over the Jets and Docomo before succumbing to the more aggressive play of the Beach Boys.
