Gov. Benigno Fitial signed a proclamation yesterday declaring May 17-22 as CNMI Boating Week during a well-attended ceremony at the Governor’s Office conference room.

The proclamation stated that while boating is a source of recreation, it could also be a dangerous sport. Records show that each year between 700 and 800 people die in boating-related accident in the U.S. mainland.

In 2008 alone, CNMI Boating Safety officers responded to three sunken vessels, a jetski accident, a vessel accident, a vessel on fire, a vessel aground, a kayak accident and a wakeboard accident.

It is recommended that wearing life jackets when operating or riding a boat is one of the precautionary measures everyone must practice.

“It is a simple task that can save lives,” the proclamation stated.

Other basic things to do are to obey navigation rules such as refraining from drinking alcohol or taking drugs while operating a boat.

Since knowledge and skills are important in reducing human error and improving judgment, people are reminded to be aware of the risks and must take precautionary measure in protecting themselves, their friends and their family.

“This is why we must continue to spread the message of boating safety not only during Safe Boating Week, but also throughout the entire year,” the proclamation stressed.

A total of 389 vessels were inspected by CNMI boating officers last year. They also did 400 hours of marine enforcement patrol and responded to nine distress calls, four drowning fatalities, nine near-drownings, and issued a total of 191 citations.

“”I urge all citizens to observe this week with appropriate ceremonies and activities and to practice “Boat Smart, Boat Safe,” by ensuring that life jackets are worn at all times when boating and to practice safe boating habits,” said Fitial in signing the proclamation.

The event was attended Department of Public Safety personnel led by Commissioner Santiago F. Tudela.
